When I Wish I Weren't Alone

I live in a small town.

Very small.

Safe.

I live in a town where crime doesn't exist. Literally, no crime.

Where you make jokes like - why don't people use turn signals here? Because everyone knows where you are going.

But recently there has been a rash of burglaries.

I realized on Sunday I had been a target.

I didn't get out of bed very early on Sunday. It may have been 10:45 a.m. when I crawled out of bed and made my way directly to my couch.

Around 11 there is a knock on my door.

I answer.

"Hey! You aren't old!"

(no shit!)

I just stared at the guy. He starts in about some contest.

I am too tired to listen. I say that I am not interested.

He persists.

I say that I am not interested and shut the door.

Monday morning I am checking Facebook. You know how it shows you the most popular posts and you have to click to get get back to most recent? For once I am glad for most popular.

A friend and neighbor says that the cops stopped by her house to warn them about some break-ins. That the people were using a rouse of asking for help with a contest and when you let them in to hear about it they see what you have to steal. If you aren't home they break in and take what they find.

I'm so glad I was home.

My doors are locked. And thanks B for keeping the boogy man out.

  1. So fricken creepy, and it really makes you think about living alone and being cautious, careful and alert. Glad you went with your instincts and quickly shut the door.

  2. OMG! That is soooo scary. I am so glad you are ok and nothing happened. That would freak me out. Almost glad I am reading this at my hotel room not at home ;-) My old house was broken into about 6 months after my ex and I bought it and I never felt safe after that...even though we lived in a good neightborhood, it can happen anywhere. Lock the doors and be careful, all you can do, right?

  3. Shortly after my ex-husband and I separated I was living in an old farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. You couldn't see any other houses from where I was, and there were no street lights out there, when it got dark, it was DARK. It was so "safe" out there, that my aunt (who owned the house and was letting me stay there) didn't have keys for the doors, they never locked the house when they lived there and they never locked it while it sat empty before I moved in. So, I never locked the doors. It became an issue when a man bludgeoned 5 people to death in the town over and was on the loose. I slept with a hammer under my pillow, and when I say slept, I mean I lay in bed never once closing my eyes.

I understand. Living alone has its upsides, but when something like that happens, there's no upside to be found.

  4. Eek. That's creepy for sure. Hope the scam goes away now that it's public knowledge.

  5. Ohhh yikes. That's so scary. I worry about that kind of stuff all the time, even though there's hardly any crime in my neighborhood either. Glad to hear you're safe and sound!!
